I went down the memory lane, when I saw a face book post about “Stematis” a ship that ran aground in Chennai in 1965. I remember going to the Marina beach with my parents to see this, as did so many others. I was about 10 years old. A little disappointed as the ship seemed much smaller than what I imagined ships to be. This was a must take visitors, in our agenda, when my cousins and relatives came to Chennai. The Marina, itself was so much cleaner, white sands with vast expanse of land. It was so close to the shore that it seemed that a small swim is possible to reach it. But many who attempted this also lost their lives. I read from notes that the ship ran ground near the present day Seerani Arangam (formerly known as the Tilak Ghat). 61 years… Thanks to face book that brought this memory back to me.
